2 /5 Fernie D: I don’t know where to begin about how disappointing and awful my stay was. Room appeared clean but I found a bent nail on the floor by the bed, (see picture) furnishings dated and tired, a very off putting stain on the curtain lining, (photo) window sash cord broken; despite the warning signs (photo) there was no hot water at all (best I got was tepid, after running the shower for about 5 minutes, too cold to get in it). Shower has black mould in the sealant and was not appealing in the slightest (photo).
Towels and sheets clean but no mattress protector, just one thin sheet on it and the duvet in a cover, pillows were poor quality and so thin that I needed all 4 at once (see photo ) No lighting options other than on or off- no bedside lamp.
Tv didn’t work and there were no instructions, it was a jumble of wires with a black box perched on the wall heater, (photo) no room information about when reception was available, and the worst part was an intermittent thudding and banging noise which finally stopped at 20 past midnight.
It sounded like a skip or van being loaded.
I took it up with the receptionist in the morning but he denied any work had been going on and blamed the wind (it was still windy in the morning but the noise had stopped) I had been told on arrival that I was one of only 2 guests that night so it wasn’t as if there were any wild parties going on!
Breakfast was so poor that they needn’t have bothered- a jug of milk, another of orange juice, some tea bags and instant coffee were on a table with some cheap jams and some cereal in dispensers, an open packet of weetabix type biscuits, and some yoghurts on a plate. Hot water was brought on request to make the tea and the only other offering was toast, which arrived as 2 slices of supermarket white sliced bread spread thickly with a yellow spread, said to be butter but I think it was margarine. Either way it made me feel nauseous and I couldn’t eat it- I have never had a hotel where someone brought toast already spread like this, I would at least expect to be given the choice.
I only saw the same gentleman member of staff during my stay and although he was polite, he wasn’t very friendly and didn’t seem keen to help. He did manage to get the tv working but couldn’t explain how and after I turned it off to settle down to sleep, I couldn’t get it working again when I wanted to put it back on to try to mask the noises outside.
The hotel is in a good location for me as only a few minutes from where I needed to be in the morning - the price was good (supposedly because of the restaurant being closed for refurbishment) but I would not stay again- it looks good from the outside but the reality is a lot different.
