5 /5 Amz N: A Hackney gem — and one of the best Caribbean restaurants I’ve ever been to
I discovered Peppers and Spice about five or six years ago, and it has never once let me down. Having grown up in South London and lived in Hackney for 15 years, I know good food and this place is something special.
There’s sometimes an unspoken intimidation around certain Caribbean restaurants, but Peppers and Spice has none of that. From the moment you walk in, the warmth is genuine.
The staff are friendly, efficient, and professional with every single customer no favouritism, no cliques. And you can feel it in the atmosphere too; the other customers tend to reflect that same warmth back. Whether that’s an East London thing or simply the tone this place sets, I’m not sure, but it works beautifully.
The food is consistently delicious and always tastes fresh I genuinely don’t know how they maintain that standard, but they do. Portions are generous, the menu is regularly updated and refreshed, and the restaurant itself is immaculate. They redecorated recently and it looks wonderful. This is a place that clearly takes pride in every detail.
This morning I treated myself I went in intending to get saltfish and ackee with dumplings, and came out having also tried the steamed fish stew with cabbage, plus some plantain. Everything was outstanding, and the whole lot came to ÂŁ20. That is exceptional value.
Peppers and Spice is a true treasure of Dalston. Customer service is 100 out of 10. Highest possible recommendation.
