3 /5 Irene Knowles: I had been looking forward to visiting this historical Tottenham joint for a very long time.
Unfortunately my experience didnt quite live up to the expectations, both on the customer service and food fronts.
I will start with the former: the place is rather loud and busy (which is totally OK, makes for a lively atmosphere), and the counter really high, which would require the server to speak up and engage a bit more proactively with punters. However, this wasnt the case with the young lady who took my order. She kept whispering barely audible words, despite my making it clear I could not hear and repeated requests to raise the volume of her voice, never once smiling or trying to be more helpful. I am fully aware this is a no-frills takeaway, but friendliness can shine through even in very short customer interactions, and on this occasion the lack of care made the experience uneasy and awkward.
Moving on to the food: I ordered mutton soup, and a jerk chicken menu. The soup was tasty and the portion satisfying; the jerk chicken on the other hand was well-cooked, but it felt too little compared to the accompanying portion of rice and peas, which ended up being quite dry as a result. Even if they did not want to place more chunks of chicken in the box, more sauce would have definitely been warranted to give the dish some balance.
Lastly, the jerk chicken was supposed to come with a dumpling, according to the menu; however, once I got home there was no trace of it in the box, which left me shortchanged.
Overall not terrible, but I think it is fair to expect much better from an established institution like this.
