3 /5 J L: I recently moved to the area and had my parents visiting, so I thought I’d try the Sunday roast at The Connaught. I booked a couple of weeks in advance and we were seated in the dining area rather than the bar.
1. The service was friendly but disorganised. They took our food order immediately, at which point we asked for the wine menu, but it never arrived. We couldn’t get anyone’s attention, so I took one myself from the service area. When the food arrived, the server couldn’t take a wine order and said she would find someone who could, but this didn’t happen. In the end, I had to track down a waitress to order wine. The food arrived before we had any drinks, water, or cutlery.
2. The main lights were fully on which in my opinion isnt great for ambience - it was dimmer in the bar area so I wished we were sat there instead.
3. There were a lot of children dining at the same time, with nearby tables full of crayons and iPads. Of course this is fine and isnt a criticism, just expect a very family atmosphere.
4. I appreciated that the roasts were available gluten free (with some ingredients omitted), but it would have been good to have a standard gluten-free beer on draught, which is fairly common in Brighton and Hove. The only option was Jubel, which is very sweet and not great with food.
5. Portion sizes were fine. My lamb was pleasant, though a little fatty, but the roast potatoes were really dry.
Overall, I’d rate it as okay, but I’m not sure I’d recommend it.
