5 /5 C&M: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Absolutely Outstanding – The Best Meal of Our UK Trip!
We visited The Meldiz Turkish Restaurant in Basingstoke with our family (two adults and two kids) on a chilly December evening, and it was hands-down the highlight of our week-long tour around the UK. From the moment we walked in, the warm, welcoming atmosphere enveloped us like a hug – cozy lighting, tasteful decor, and that irresistible aroma of charcoal-grilled meats wafting from the kitchen.
The service was exceptional and truly personal. Owner Mursel and his lovely daughter served many of our dishes themselves, alongside a team of attentive, professional, and genuinely friendly staff who made us feel like valued guests rather than just customers. They were fantastic with the kids, offering recommendations and ensuring everything was perfect without ever feeling rushed.
Now, onto the food – oh my goodness, every single dish was a masterpiece of authentic Turkish flavors, perfectly executed with fresh ingredients and that signature smoky char from the grill. We ordered:
• Lamb Chops (4 pieces): These were sublime – tender, juicy cuts of lamb with a beautiful crispy exterior from the charcoal grill. Seasoned to perfection with herbs and spices that enhanced the natural richness of the meat, served with fluffy yellow rice (perfectly seasoned and aromatic), a creamy garlic sauce, fresh salad, and grilled vegetables. The chops were so flavorful and melt-in-your-mouth tender that we fought over the last one!
• Chicken Wings: A generous portion of plump, golden wings that were crispy on the outside yet incredibly succulent inside. They had a delightful spicy kick balanced with herbs, paired with the same vibrant rice pilaf, cooling yogurt-based sauce, and fresh sides. The kids absolutely devoured these – crispy, flavorful, and not overly greasy.
• Calamari: Lightly battered and fried to golden perfection, these rings were fresh, tender, and not at all rubbery. Served with a tangy garlic mayo dip that complemented the subtle sea flavor beautifully. A perfect lighter starter that disappeared in minutes!
• Tomato Linguini (pasta): This was a thoughtful choice for the kids (and us adults stole bites too!). Al dente linguini tossed in a rich, homemade tomato sauce that was bursting with fresh herbs, garlic, and a hint of sweetness. Topped with grated cheese and parsley, it was comforting, hearty, and surprisingly sophisticated for a “kids’ dish” – far better than any chain restaurant pasta we’ve had.
• Two Sirloin Steaks (medium rare as noted): Wow – these were cooked to absolute perfection, with a gorgeous charred crust sealing in all the juices. Beautifully pink in the center, seasoned expertly with herbs and spices, and served with skinny fries, a fresh mixed salad (tomatoes, cucumber, red onion), creamy sauce, and that same delicious rice on the side for one. Rich, beefy flavor that rivaled top steakhouses, and massive portions that left us satisfyingly full.
We finished with a refreshing fresh mint tea that was the perfect palate cleanser. Portions were generous, everything arrived piping hot and beautifully presented, and the flavors were bold yet balanced – authentic Turkish cuisine at its finest.
My son, who’s been a bit picky on this trip, declared this “the best food I’ve had in the whole week in the UK” – high praise from a kid! The whole family agreed: this meal was unforgettable. Great value too, especially for the quality.
If you’re in Basingstoke, do yourself a favor and visit The Meldiz. Mursel and his team have created something truly special – we’ll be dreaming about those lamb chops until we return. Highly, highly recommended! Thank you for an amazing evening.
