5 /5 Simon Lee: I’ve been eating at McDermott’s for years, and was surprised to notice I had failed to leave a review sooner! Written by someone who probably eats too many fish and chips in too many locations: I reckon they’re some of the consistently best in the country. The batter is always crisp and crunchy, with perfectly cooked fish within, the chips are hand-cut, the staff are always friendly and you can even get London Pride in here for less than you’d pay at the pub! Always happy to call in, and even make an effort to visit.

5 /5 Briggy Smale: My 99 year old Dads favourite place. Their batter is sensational - so light and crispy. Bread, pickles and a dish of tartare arrive as soon as you sit down. The staff are so friendly and attentive; service is impeccable Tasteful decor, plenty of space between tables and a huge glass front enhances your dining experience. It certainly lives up to its name as the best chippie in town! Oh, and you can take desert home (the portions are so big, youll need to wait a while for space in your tummy). Dad said the apple crumble & custard was delicious, with tasty chunks of apple. Put this place on your bucket list!

2 /5 Paige Goddard: undercooked, small portion, expensive and mid fish and chips. even though everything was ordered completely separately everything was thrown in one bag. when mentioning i dont eat meat or fish and was visibly upset that my food have been ‘contaminated’, the cashier talked down to me saying that i didnt ask and that it wasn’t their problem. there was no sympathy or respect from her and she just stared at me in silence for a minute before i left even more upset. obviously i know she can’t read my mind but i would assume when ordering everything separately and not as meals everything would be bagged separately and when a customer is upset maybe just a sorry at least would be appropriate??? this isnt the first time this has happened as we have asked to keep the chips and the meat separately before but she didn’t remember anyway. it was extremely quiet so the was no wait or rush. food was underwhelming and the batter on the fish and sausage was undercooked and dripping with oil and the chip were just fine. if you’re going to have staff with horrible attitudes at least have outstanding food.

1 /5 1 2: Came in for some sausages, fish and chips for my partners family, they just threw all the meat over the chips without asking, my partner is a strict vegetarian and found this upsetting, this alone wouldnt be the slightest probably but the woman serving was very insincere and unapologetic, she could see my partner was upset but just stared at her and didnt say anything, which only made us both feel worse, The only thing she did say is that we shouldve let her know explicitly when ordering- which again is fair, except on other visits Ive asked her personally to do this and she hasnt done it once, never even seemed to care to remember that Id asked. Absolutely ruined mine and my partners day I would recommend going to a friendly chippy, chippys are known for being friendly so this is very disappointing. Just a bit more of a sincere response to a dietary requirement- Ive worked in catering my whole life, Ive had customers make mistakes when ordering and Ive always happily helped them and not made them feel like theyve messed up ordering, its just common courtesy, a fresh portion of chips wouldve cost them pennies, it wasnt busy at all there was no other customers, it was just lazy. I really hope theyd take other dietary requirements more seriously, I wonder if theyd have done anything differently if it was an allergy. Also food was slightly undercooked and a little disappointing, I remember it being better here.
