5 /5 Stretch Darkmagi: Looking for the best café at Dockside Outlet Centre? Ru-Café is one of the standout independent coffee spots right in the heart of Dockside.
This independent café offers far more than a quick coffee stop. The menu is genuinely extensive and it truly feels like there’s something for everyone. Whether you want a full all-day breakfast, a proper lunch, fresh sourdough sandwiches, soups, savoury pies and sausage rolls, or simply excellent coffee and cake, the choice is impressive.
The drinks menu really stands out. Alongside a full barista coffee range, there’s a wide selection of speciality lattes and an unusually broad choice of syrup add-ins that go well beyond the usual coffee shop selection. It allows you to tailor your drink exactly how you like it. There are also hot chocolates, iced coffees, frappes, fruit smoothies, milkshakes and cloudy lemonades, making it a great stop whatever the weather.
The pastry and cake display is particularly tempting. Croissants include a very tasty almond option alongside hazelnut and classic varieties. Muffins are joined by duffins, which for anyone unfamiliar are a cross between a doughnut and a muffin. They have the soft, enriched texture of a doughnut but are baked like a muffin, often filled or topped, and are well worth trying. You’ll also find traybakes, Belgian shortbread, carrot cake and more. Vegan and gluten free options are available too, and it’s best to ask the friendly staff what’s on offer that day. Allergen information is clearly labelled, which is reassuring.
I tried the red velvet cake which, although presented in a large muffin-style liner, felt like having a personal whole cake to myself. It was generous, moist and very satisfying. The coffee and walnut cake paired beautifully with a tiramisu latte, which complemented the nutty richness perfectly without being overly sweet.
The seating area is generous and comfortable, with plenty of space, which also makes it ideal from an accessibility point of view. It doesn’t feel cramped, and it’s easy to move around.
Prices are reasonable for the quality and portion sizes, especially for a café at Dockside Outlet Centre. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, and it stands out as a genuine independent among the larger retail brands nearby.
If you’re at Dockside and fancy something better than the usual chain options, this is a really solid choice. I’ll happily go back.
