1 /5 Jessica Lawrence: I had very high expectations for Aunt Mary’s given how many good things I’d heard about their grilled meats, but unfortunately my experience was extremely disappointing from start to finish.
The place itself is located in what feels like a rundown shack tucked away in a corner of Tottenham. The surrounding area felt very unsafe — there were people walking past who appeared to be pimps and prostitutes, which immediately put me on edge and made me uncomfortable even staying there.
We arrived right at opening time, only to be told we’d have to wait two hours because they hadn’t even started grilling the meat yet. That alone was a huge waste of time and should have been our cue to leave.
When we finally got seated, we were shoved into a corner at a table wrapped in PVC plastic, surrounded by ugly, cheap, trashy décor that felt more like a temporary setup than a proper restaurant. Nobody came to take our order for a long time, and when we eventually managed to order, half of it never arrived because the waiter forgot. Honestly, the only upside was that we didn’t have to pay for the missing items.
The cutlery was absolutely filthy, with visible food residue left on it — completely disgusting and unacceptable. That should have been the final warning sign, but because we’d heard so many positive reviews, we decided to give it another chance.
While waiting, groups of youths kept walking in and out as if it was some kind of social club rather than a restaurant, which added to the chaotic and uncomfortable atmosphere.
As for the food itself, it was nothing special at all. The grilled lamb was bland, poorly seasoned, and tasted like basic meat thrown on a grill with no real flavour or care. Definitely not worth the hype.
To make matters worse, as soon as I left the establishment, I became violently ill with what felt like immediate food poisoning. It was awful and completely ruined the day.
Overall, this was a terrible experience — unhygienic, poorly run, unsafe-feeling, and massively overhyped. I absolutely do not recommend Aunt Mary’s.
