I ordered two dishes from Kothu – a chicken biryani and a mutton kothu roti – both requested as mild.
The chicken biryani was okay, I would rate it around 3 out of 5 stars. The flavours were decent, but the fried chicken pieces were soggy and could have been much crisper. The raita also had room for improvement.
The kothu roti, however, was a real disappointment. It was extremely spicy, to the point of being inedible, despite being ordered mild. I understand that the base curry used for kothu may already be pre-prepared, but that makes it even more important to adjust for spice levels when a customer requests it. Sadly, this wasn’t done.
When Kothu first opened, the quality and consistency were much higher. Recently, it feels like standards have slipped. South Indian and Sri Lankan food is all about balance and careful use of spices – keeping this consistent is key.
I hope the chefs take this feedback on board and work on bringing the food back to the standard it once had. It’s a restaurant with great potential, but at present it falls short.
