5 /5 Dr Babu: St John’s at Hackney Churchyard Gardens is a lovely little green escape right in the heart of Hackney. It’s not the biggest park, but that’s part of its charm. It feels cozy, welcoming, and a bit hidden compared to some of London’s larger green spaces. The gardens surround the historic St John’s Church, which gives the whole place a calm, atmospheric feel.
What I like most about this spot is how well it balances being peaceful and community-focused. On a sunny day, you’ll see families with kids playing, people walking dogs, and locals sitting on benches with a coffee. It has a very relaxed, neighborhood vibe, which makes it a great place to unwind without the crowds you get in bigger parks. The greenery is well-kept, and in spring and summer the flowers and trees make it especially beautiful.
Because it’s close to Hackney Central, it’s also really convenient if you just want a quick break from the busy streets. It’s not a place you’d travel across the city to see, but if you’re in the area, it’s definitely worth stopping by. St John’s Gardens may be small, but it feels like a real community gem where Hackney slows down a little.
