3 /5 Preeta: Was very excited to try this upon hearing about its opening, as this part of London / Essex doesn’t have many Caribbean food spots. Unfortunately, I found the food at Kyices quite average.
I ordered:
Meat box ÂŁ25 - includes 2 meats (I went for oxtail & jerk chicken), rice & peas, coleslaw, plantain, mac & cheese, & salad (they forgot to pack it in the bag)
Loaded box ÂŁ8.5 - includes chips topped with meat (I went for peppered steak) and a drink (they forgot my drink)
XXXL Shrimps - ÂŁ5
The jerk chicken was nice, and I enjoyed the rice & peas, coleslaw and plantain (although I wish there was more of it, 2 pieces is quite stingy).
The oxtail was very dry.
Mac & cheese had a strange gloopy / grainy texture, wasn’t stringy and didn’t have the cheese pull you’d usually expect from Mac & cheese.
Peppered steak was bone dry aswell with not much flavour. Chips were soggy, but also dry? They could’ve done with a bit more seasoning on them - I ended up dipping them in the leftover jerk sauce in the meat box tray. This meal would be better with a pot of sauce on the side rather than pouring the sauce all over the chips and making them soggy.
Prawns were nice but not enough for me to want to go back.
Quite disappointing they forgot my salad & drink.
Overall I found the food quite average, the only enjoyable part was the jerk chicken, but it was a very small portion for ÂŁ25, the meat box was only 1 thigh of chicken and a few pieces of oxtail with sides. Quite steep. I spent ÂŁ38.50 in total.
Staff were friendly and it was clean in there. Good to see they have a 5 hygiene rating.
I won’t be rushing back here, but might give it another go at some point to try their seafood boils.
