3 /5 T C: Food was really creative and very tasty, but unfortunately we had a rather disappointing experience at St. John Bread and Wine the other evening. We didn’t get any introduction to how the menu works nor the specials of the day. Both of us were seated with our backs to the specials blackboard, so we had no idea there were other foods on offer until one of us went to the restroom later. The lack of explanation regarding the sharing style led us to: 1. each ordering our own starters and mains, 2. not realizing one of the starters was actually a snack (extra small portion), 3. receiving our dishes in rather funky orders. But I must admit, this one is partially on us, we were told that the dishes typically come as they become available and had the chance to have them served as starters and mains, but one of us said it was ok to follow the norm of the restaurant. Finally, our table was situated in front of some coat hooks by the entrance. Which meant that two of us had to get up several times during the meal to let others get their coats out. On top of that, the entrance door doesn’t close itself, so every time anyone entered or exited, the door was left open, allowing a strong cold draft to enter - cooling us and our food. That said, I am looking forward to returning and hopefully having a better experience next time.

The salt cod with chickpeas showcased St. JOHN’s signature approach: honest ingredients, prepared with restraint and confidence. The fish was beautifully flaky, resting on a bed of chickpeas infused with olive oil, delivering an unpretentious yet deeply satisfying harmony of textures. The roast beef, impossibly tender and blushing pink, arrived with earthy beets and a generous dollop of horseradish—comforting, elegant, and rooted in classic British sensibilities. Dessert was a perfect finale: warm, freshly baked madeleines surrounding a scoop of ice cream. Their buttery aroma and delicately caramelized exterior captured the essence of indulgence without excess. The duck legs were ridiculous: deep flavour, perfectly cooked, rustic in the best way. Comforting yet precise. The veal minced pie? Proper, old-school excellence. Rich, balanced, and exactly what a pie should be — no reinvention needed when it’s done this well. And then… the madeleines. They come hot. Straight from the oven. Honestly insane. Crisp edges, soft centre, butter everywhere — one of those desserts you remember long after the meal is over.
