The Jolly Sportsman - (Near East Sussex, South East)

3 /5 Dana Coleman: I booked the Jolly Sportsman for my husband’s birthday for a roast. We’ve heard great things from friends and were so excited to come. I can’t fault the staff as they were super friendly and attentive to us all. Sadly the food was disappointing. We all ordered the pork belly which flew out the kitchen within 5 minutes of ordering. The pork wasn’t crispy and the Yorkshires were dry. The cabbage was watery with no seasoning and for £24. a plate I just expected more. I really wanted to love this place as the location and surroundings are stunning. I hope we caught the kitchen on a bad day.

5 /5 Kezia Dunham: An absolute gem! Everything about our stay at The Jolly Sportsman, from check-in to check-out, was perfect. I genuinely couldn’t fault a thing! Every member of staff was so lovely and welcoming, the food was incredible, and the atmosphere was wonderfully tranquil. It was our first visit, but it certainly won’t be our last. The surrounding area is beautiful, and our room was thoughtfully designed with lots of lovely touches and helpful information. The bed was so comfortable that as soon as our heads hit the pillows, we were asleep! The dining experience was also outstanding. The seating areas are charming, our servers were friendly and attentive, and both the food and wine were delightful. The breakfast was up there as one of our best, again a really cosy seating area, the food was clearly fresh, locally-sourced and every effort had been put in to ensure the customer experience was second-to-none! We cannot thank every one at the Jolly Sportsman enough for such a lovely time! If you’re thinking of visiting then let this be the sign, you’d be missing out if you don’t!

2 /5 Theo: The place is stunning and the staff were very friendly, but unfortunately the food really let this place down. While I understand that the cost of raw ingredients has increased, £31 for a pork schnitzel and chips feels more reflective of central London prices and was disappointing in a countryside setting. In our opinion, the food was not high quality — the pork was incredibly fatty and had to be sent back, and the replacement roast beef sandwich was very underwhelming. Such a shame, as we had high expectations for this place.

5 /5 Kendall Elliott: Had this place saved for ages to go to and it didn’t disappoint. Food was so lovely and the inside is so snug and warm. Food was pricey but was expected, would recommend for a special occasion. Dog friendly as well, so definitely will be back.

5 /5 ST: Third time here and just amazing. Simply one of the best meals Ive ever had and great to have somewhere I can really recommend. Staff, ambience, food, drinks and facilities all brilliant. Having seen previous reviews that knocked the fish and chips and the pork belly, we decided to risk it and see for ourselves and we couldnt disagree more. The Pork belly meal was flawless and the fish and chips were lovely. Some of the best chips weve ever had and the fish definitely wasnt all batter. Its debatable over how good the fish is but thats the personal preference, but it was very good. The Chicken Milanese was brilliant and we love the Jolly Ginger mocktails. Dessert wise, again, we thought they were excellent. I must say however the crumble isnt quite to my liking due to the cluster type of crumble, but again this is more personal preference, but definitely had enough filling inside though it is very hot, so I do recommend leaving it to cool down a bit first. We will definitely be back and so far everything has been very consistent and I would definitely recommend going and seeing for yourself.and if things arent to your liking, mention it at the time as I can assure you the food is very good and you may have just got unlucky.
