5 /5 Black Queen: A Masterclass in Flavour and Heart — Rapchar is My New Favourite! Oh my days — this place has officially taken the number one spot on my foodie list, and trust me, I’ve been to a few. I started with the scallops and honestly? Absolutely exquisite. Perfectly cooked, bursting with flavour, and beautifully presented — everything on that plate earned its place. That’s the key here: so much freshness, so much flavour, and zero filler. For my main, I had fish with prawns, served with a cauliflower foam that completely blew me away. You could actually taste the cauliflower — light but still with body, and the flavour balance was spot-on. It was the kind of dish that manages to be both comforting and high-end dining at the same time — pure talent. The presentation across every plate was exceptional. You could tell real care had gone into every detail. The mac and cheese side was rich, creamy, and deeply satisfying — proper comfort food but refined. I didn’t even reach for the salt and pepper once (and that says a lot). I had sorrel to drink — rich, vibrant, and packed with flavour — the perfect pairing to cut through the richness of the dishes. I’ve never had sorrel like it (sorry, Mum). Unfortunately, I didn’t have room for dessert — tragic, I know — but that just gives me an excuse for next time. The service was exceptional — food arrived quickly, staff were polite and genuinely lovely, and the vibe was relaxed, friendly, and unpretentious. Even though the restaurant was full, the layout made it feel intimate, with a warm, family atmosphere. My only downside? When the chef came out to greet everyone, I did what any self-respecting foodie would do and offered him my hand in marriage. Sadly, he declined. I can only assume that i was at the back of a very long queue, because his food was slamming. Rapchar nails it: high-end food, comforting flavours, zero pretence, and genuine hospitality. I’ve already booked my next visit, because once is simply not enough! Well done, Rapchar — you’ve set the bar sky-high.

1 /5 Donna E: To say I am so disappointed is an understatement. We as a family try to support small businesses so when we wanted to celebrate our Mums birthday we decided to come here. BIG MISTAKE!!! First and foremost if you cannot accommodate a party size just be honest, it not everyday be blinded by pound signs. That being said prior to booking I made clear that there would be some minors present and as a result the latest booking we could have was 7pm. This was initially agreed to, the booking was made well over a week in advance, some more people were added to the party but it did not seem that it would cause any issue. Fast forward to the day before the booking I receive a message stating the booking has to be moved to 8pm as the chef looked at it and said he wouldnt be able to cope, also as it is a small establishment they want all the guests to be comfortable. Although the time change was inconvenient we agreed on a 7.30 arrival for our party. Upon arrival nobody said anything no greeting, nothing it was only when they needed clarity on a food item did someone approach me. In regards to food we had to pre order our menu items, we also agreed that the children would have a simple dish like chicken and rice to keep things simple. The poor children are still waiting for that food and ended up having to eat from their parents plates. Bearing in mind the booking was for 7.30 it was after 9 before our mains appeared on the table which is diabolical. We also bought a cake for our Mum when asking could we have some plates or purchase some take away boxes the waitress looked at me and said it would be cheaper to go next door and buy some foil, customer service at its finest NOT!!!! When it came to paying the bill we were overcharged, initially I paid £220 deposit which initially they said they could not find then they found £180, then another £20 which made no sense as the payments were made of £180 then an additional £40. I sent an email registering a formal complaint but surprise surprise it has not been acknowledged. I can see why businesses like this end up failing as people try to support but receive below par sub standard service. I definitely do not recommend. The rating for the atmosphere is solely for our family vibes. Rum punch tasted watered down and the food was just ok

4 /5 Shernette Lawrence: Overall, Rap Char was a flavourful experience with some hiccups Upon arrival, the restaurant appeared fully booked, a birthday dinner celebration was in full swing. The restaurant is small and cosy, approximately seating about 15 upstairs and 15 downstairs. My party of 2, learnt our booking was downstairs, which was fine, (just bear in mind the stairs are narrow and steep). Tables are close together, so the ambiance downstairs is quite intimate. Leafing through the menu there are many Carribean classics to choose from, with a great culinary twist on each dish, same with the cocktails. The jerk chicken is perfectly spiced, and the rice and peas and plantains are equally delicious. The standout dish on the menu for me is the ackee and plantain croquettes, which are wonderfully soft crusted on the outside, yet creamy and delicious on the inside! However, it’s worth noting that the service was noticeably slow. There was an hour delay with our food between starters to main course. We were told it was due to catering for the large dinner party upstairs. Unfortunately for me and my companion, the long wait between courses led to some discomfort and a bit of bloating by the time the main dishes arrived. We had filled ourselves with drinks to cover the waiting time and our rumbling bellies. We just wished we could have fully enjoyed and appreciate our main courses, as the quality of the ingredients and the plate decor attention to detail are 1st class in my opinion. I ordered the Jamrock platter, but had to force myself to finish it after just a few bites, (the main course dishes are on the pricey side, so I wanted to get my monies worth). We did mention our dining experience to the waitress and was slightly disappointed we were not offered a gesture of good will by way of a discount, due the the wait. Nevertheless, we believe the dishes at Rap Char are worthy of their prices, it’s was just unfortunate on our visit, it appeared that large bookings, take precedence, which comprises their service of their food, with other booked diners. My critique to minimise this moving forward, would be to suggest, when booking large dining parties, you should offer a 2 hr period where that party will get your full attention, without comprising your booked diners. Maybe only take walk in customers during this period, so you can let them know in advance that there may be a wait between courses.

5 /5 Locating Lucy: If you’re craving bold Caribbean flavours, you need to visit Rapchar! Every dish we ate was full of flavour & well presented. They also have a great cocktail menu, I’d recommend the rum punch! We were very impressed with this meal. The scallops were exquisite! Well cooked & beautifully presented, accompanied by a beautifully smooth bbq cauliflower puree. Also the honey glazed jerk wings were banging! Decent sized wings & tasty chicken with a good amount of sauce. They were worth getting messy for! For mains we shared the braised ox and boneless curried goat with rice & gungo peas. Both were really tasty! The ox was a bit too boney for me, but it had a good flavour with a hint of spice. This was my first time trying curried goat. I really liked it, tender meat with plenty of sauce. We couldn’t resist ordering a side of return of the Mac as well. It was probably one of the best Mac n cheese I’ve had in a while. Super cheesy, spilling out of the dish. It had a subtle kick of spice & crispy top. It was so moreish! We finished our meal with their take on Eton mess, Caribbean mess. A mix of mango, passionfruit, meringue & a dreamy rum cream.. ngl I wished we’d have got one each!
