4 /5 Haneen Urooj: Me and my partner had a lovely valentines meal at Chaula’s. The food was incredibly fresh with a wide variety of dishes. The staff were friendly and asked regularly to meet any dietary requirements. I would highly recommend this restaurant with traditional Gurjarati food and will be visiting again. H + C 14.02.26

1 /5 Ashly James: I ordered chicken biryani here a couple of days ago, and it was honestly one of the worst food experiences I’ve ever had. The chicken was completely unappetizing, the rice was undercooked, and whatever curry base they used with the chicken was so bad that it was literally inedible. This is not Indian food by any stretch of the imagination. Please don’t scam customers by using the name of Indian cuisine while serving food that doesn’t even meet basic quality standards. I felt completely disappointed and cheated. I’m leaving this review as a warning to other customers: save your money and go somewhere that actually respects the food they’re serving.

5 /5 Nick Case: We had an absolutely brilliant meal here. The service was incredibly helpful and attentive with all aspects of the menu. We had 2 starters, 2 mains, 1 rice and 1 naan and left very satisfied and full. All was cooked very well and the flavours were delicious. Update 2024: Chaulas is incredible. Staff very knowledgeable and friendly on what is vegan and what isnt. All the food is cooked in sunflower oil, not ghee so the choice is very good. Completely separate vegetarian sections on the menu, and not just the usual 5-8 curries you get, some very interesting options. The curries all tasted fresh and left us full but not over-full. The roti and paratha were also excellent. Overall, this is probably the best Indian Ive visited in years. There was a great selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes, all labelled on the menu, and the staff were very helpful with any questions we had about the cooking of the dishes. Couldnt recommend more for a lovely meal!

2 /5 Joseph Poston: We were recommended by colleagues and friends local to Lewes. Decided to come for my 2 year anniversary with my partner (we both love Indian food) arrived on time at 18:30 for our booking and were shown to our table. Everything was good, service a little slow for ordering food, starters and drinks turned up promptly though - A bottle of wine to share and a beer. We enjoyed our mains, and the staff were friendly. However, the evening was sadly cut short. At around 7:50, the waiter came to our table and informed us that we needed to leave as our table was ‘needed’ for new customers. My partner had a full glass of wine (with more in the bottle). We asked how long we had to finish our drinks and we were told we needed to leave immediately. At this point we had only just finished our mains and hadn’t even been offered desserts. Very disappointed. We left to pay at the front, alas nobody was there to even take the payment. Honestly, we were both left with a sour taste in our mouths after what could have been a lovely dinner/evening out. Really gave the impression our experience was less important than the opportunity to make more money:(
