The Chequers Inn - (Near East Sussex, South East)

5 /5 Eve Trestain: We had a meal at The Chequers Inn and were genuinely blown away. The steak and ale pie was absolutely amazing — packed with flavour, perfectly cooked, and easily one of the best pub pies we’ve ever had. The atmosphere was lovely too: warm, welcoming and relaxed, making it the perfect place to unwind. The staff were brilliant — really friendly, attentive, and made us feel looked after from start to finish. A truly wonderful experience all round. We’ll definitely be coming back!

5 /5 Agnieszka Tatarzyn: We went to the pub on the way back from a weekend away, and chose it only because it was close and allowed dogs in. We didn’t have a booking but the lady quickly found us a table despite the pub being quite busy. We all ordered beef roast and It was one of the best roasts I had in a while. The portions were very big, sirloin was cooked to perfection, the Yorkshire pudding was delicious even when it got cold and the trimmings were to die for. We finished it off with a delicious Pavlova! We will definitely be back next time when in the area.

5 /5 Els Oosthoek: We’ve enjoyed a lovely Sunday roast at the Chequers Inn. Fresh veggies, wonderfully tasteful food - the chestnut and mushroom Wellington was very nice, as was the sirloin steak my husband enjoyed. As a dessert we had the hot chocolate cake with cold vanilla ice cream: lovely combination. The origins of the building as a pub or coaching house date from 1414, and some parts are even 12th century. Even so, today the paint is fresh and the interior is lovely and snug. A must go if you visit the area.

5 /5 Paul Burwood: Visited the Chequers for Sunday lunch whilst visiting the Christmas Market in Tunbridge Wells. The roast beef was perfect; nice and rare, beautifully tender and loads of it. We were seated in the bar area where the music was a little loud, and the seats were not overly comfortable. The restaurant are looked more inviting. The pigs in blankets we ordered as a starter were delightful, and the Pavlova we shared for dessert was absolutely amazing.

5 /5 Daisy Docherty: We celebrated our Bump and Baby group’s 1st birthday at The Chequers and had such a lovely time. They looked after 18 adults and 9 babies and made everything feel easy and welcoming from start to finish. We all managed to sit down together and enjoy a roast dinner (which is no small achievement with that many babies!), and the staff were brilliant — friendly, patient and really accommodating. They were happy for us to decorate the space and even let us bring in hired soft play for the babies, which was perfect and kept everyone happy. The babies were having a great time, the parents were relaxed, and it was just a really enjoyable afternoon all round. Huge thanks to the team for helping us celebrate — we’d absolutely recommend them for family-friendly get-togethers and special occasions.
