5 /5 Melissa Eisner: I mean … sure, every pub boasts being the oldest in the UK, but I’m pretty sure this is the real deal. Beyond the history in a historic location, this pub is bomb.com. Great service, great menu. Loved the chicken wings, and the burger was fab! And who doesn’t love a good pint to wash it all down. Highly recommend!!!

5 /5 Billur Kayador: We booked a table for New Year’s Day lunch and ended up with one of the cosiest tables in the pub (cosy corner). The old feel of the pub was amazing, the lights are quite dim and you are instantly taken back to the time of Dickens. The mushroom, spinach and white truffle suet pudding was okay, though we didn’t taste the truffle that much. The waiter told us beforehand that we might want to order a side, due to its modest portion size (one carrot and two small potatoes - besides the suet pudding). The sticky toffee pudding was a hit, though. The best I had. The crumble was disappointing. Overall, the atmosphere was amazing, for the food we would try other items on the menu next time. Definitely recommend the sticky toffee pudding!

5 /5 Justin Rogers-Cooper: Worth the effort to see first-hand the comfortable and warm rooms of living history, with restaurant and bars across multiple levels up and down. Gothic lower regions with intoxicating spaces of the former 13th century monastery, with dim corners contrasting lit tables to provide endless fanciful flights of feeling. The cozy confines of oaky upstairs dining room suggest the Norwegian idea of hygge: lush contentment and an almost alpine escape into London’s boisterous literary past. The big Samuel Johnson portrait in the corner reminds me of the many famous guests you’re joining. The more you know about the place - and its special former resident Polly the Parrot - the more you’re likely to trip out on the extravagant and extraordinary experience. The Sunday roasts were delectably dependable, and the bitter beer - not to mention Irish whiskey - were more than an adequate way to wash down the rich flavors. And did someone say sticky toffee pudding? Really kind and attentive staff and bartenders. Nice mix of tourists and regulars around. I really hope this wasn’t my only trip.

The place oozes character—low ceilings, dark wood, and a maze of rooms that feel like stepping back in time. It’s been around since the 1600s and you can feel the layers of history in every corner. The vibe is cozy and unpretentious, with a mix of locals and curious visitors. Food’s solid, drinks are classic, and the whole experience is more about atmosphere than frills. Worth a visit if you’re into old-school charm and a proper pint.

5 /5 Brent: One of the most memorable experiences we had in London. Multiple rooms up and downstairs meant we had space to sit add have a drink in two different rooms despite this pub being in every guide book. Had dinner in the dining room and were seated in the Dickens table which was very special.
