The Anchor Inn & Boating - East Sussex

Carl Jeffrey The rural riverside setting is perfect for anyone who loves countryside walks or fancies hiring a rowing boat to explore the river. I was hiking solo on a multi-day trek from Brighton to Rochester when I came across the Anchor Inn. It was a warm early evening, and as I ordered a refreshing pint in the front bar, the landlord Simon (who had never met me before) immediately noticed my rucksack and said: “If you’re looking for somewhere to pitch your tent tonight, you’re very welcome to use the field behind the pub.” It was such a generous offer that I gladly accepted. I spent the evening enjoying a few pints in the company of Simon and his staff, who made me feel completely at home. I didn’t eat during my stay, though the food looked excellent, but I can vouch for a superb pint of Harvey’s Best Bitter. The following morning, as I was packing up at 8am, Simon even walked over with a cup of tea – an incredibly thoughtful gesture that summed up the hospitality I experienced here. I truly can’t thank Simon and his team enough. The Anchor Inn is a brilliant riverside pub, and I’ll definitely be returning with friends. Highly recommended!

Jake Scrivener Waited a long time to visit Beak and it was well worth the wait, great atmosphere, superb and friendly staff (we arrived an hour early and they still served us and were so accommodating) and needless to say the beers were brilliant. Won’t hesitate to come back.

Jamie Stewart Everything you would expect from a Sussex village pub. Good food, quaint interior, and friendly locals. Nice large beer garden. Visited on Saturday lunch time. Called in the late morning to book a table. Was told, no need they won’t be busy. Plus they don’t take bookings. Got there to discover the place was packed, inside and out! (Maybe they should consider bookings for inside table, if that is an important for some customers). As it was the weather was nice, so sitting in the beer garden was nice. The food was excellent. Tasty steak and kidney pie. Good seafood salad. Very reasonable prices. Only marked down the service because the actual bar inside is small, and on a busy day it took a while to be served. But the service was friendly. Will definitely be back. Maybe on a week day!

Simon Fisher A second visit this week as we were so impressed by the Sunday carvery. Friday is pie day, (2 for ÂŁ20 at the time of writing!) I had the most amazing beef and Guinness pie served with mustard mash and a red wine gravy. You get a choice mash, my wife had horseradish, both were delicious! All food is prepared in house! Good wholesome nosh! (Check out the carvery - see other reviews!) Recommend both!! Recommend booking as it was very busy!

Ben Davies I arranged a private lunch for 20 guests and it couldn’t have gone better. From the first enquiry, the team were organised, responsive, and incredibly helpful with all the planning details. On the day, the room looked lovely, the service ran smoothly, and the food was absolutely delicious fresh, seasonal, and great value. My guests were so impressed. A big thank you to the whole team, especially Meghan, for making it such a success.
