5 /5 Alix: I hadnt seen a review for a long time so thought I would quickly pop one on. This restaurant mainly functions as a takeaway, so the seating area is empty of decor etc. Thankfully another family were already sat down so we knew it was ok to dine-in. The service was so friendly and relaxed, just what we prefer. The speed was just right. We opted for a soup each (nice, but very gloopy) and then a set menu which included delicious crispy duck, followed by Kung Po chicken (which we had never had before, but was described as a sweet chilli sauce and reminded me of the one weve had in a jar before) and beef and vegetables in oyster sauce. There could have been more beef, but it was nice. Thank you.

5 /5 Tim Wilson: This restaurant is always very quiet but we decided to give it a go and we are so pleased we did. The decor is not at all upmarket but reminded me so much of days long past hanging around back streets of Hong Kong. Service at Ume comes with a lovely smile, which seems rare when eating out in the Esher area. The food is cooked fresh and is delicious. We went for the set menu with duck, beef and prawns - £25 per person. Very reasonable. We will be returning. Highly recommended.

2 /5 jason amendt: Very disappointing take away. The 1/4 crispy duck came off the bone which I wish I had known about, and wasnt very tasty and didnt seem particularly fresh. It came with some lettuce which was browning and again not fresh. The overall taste of the duck was not nice. Also there wasnt much meat, mostly extremely crispy bits of skin. The singapore vermicelli noodles were so salty we couldnt eat them. There was also very little meat and no prawns at all. Every other Chinese takeaway had prawns in this dish. The other dishes were passable but nothing to write home about. For a £54 meal for 2, this was terrible value. This is the first and last time we will use this takeaway.

5 /5 Laura-Jane Pontin: Still my favourite Chinese restaurant after 18 years. The food is beautifully cooked and presented and we are always greeted warmly by the owner. I think Ive had the prawns in butter sauce every time Ive been because its the best thing Ive ever tasted. Please dont ever stop doing it because Ive never seen it anywhere else! I also recommend the soft shell crab and beef and cashew. Thank you for a lovely evening celebrating my sons birthday.

5 /5 Matt Spencer: Probably the best Chinese restaurant in the Surbiton / Claygate area. Food is always fresh, ordering on the phone is easy and the staff are friendly. Prices on the higher end for a takeaway but worth it for the quality and area. I can recommend the chicken curry, my wife the crispy duck rolls.
