4 /5 Mark Johnson: Standing proudly at the heart of Thame, St Mary’s Church—dedicated to St Mary the Virgin—is a striking example of English medieval architecture and an enduring centre of local life. Built in the 13th century under Bishop Robert Grosseteste of Lincoln, the church has evolved over the centuries with graceful Gothic additions and a sensitive Victorian restoration by J. O. Scott.
Inside, the church’s monuments and tombs speak of Thame’s rich history: the alabaster figures of Lord and Lady Williams, and the Quartermain family memorials in St Christopher’s Chapel, are especially notable. Light streams through elegant tracery windows, and the lofty tower dominates the town’s skyline.
Adding a modern note, the churchyard is the final resting place of Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees, who lived opposite at The Prebendal. His 2012 funeral drew crowds of mourners, and his elegant marble headstone now sits among centuries of Thame’s history—linking the medieval and the modern in one peaceful place.
Today, St Mary’s remains a living church, hosting worship, concerts, and community events. Its blend of grandeur and warmth makes it both a heritage treasure and a welcoming place of reflection.
