5 /5 j: Reviewing the cafe: loved it. We were actually looking at the menu in the window of a different cafe, when we fell into conversation with a woman, and she recommended Crates to us. So thank you, whoever you were. It’s a quaint and cosy little establishment. They do the sort of things that you might expect a corner cafe to do; but they also sprinkle in some interesting little treats. They also strongly favour local produce. I had a jacket potato with locally sourced crab and prawns - delicious and not something that you often see. Good coffee, good service, good value. Thinking through what I would normally include in a review of a cafe: there are a lot of vegetarian options on the menu; there isn’t really a children’s menu (but there is a doggy menu); and there are steps into the cafe (but level access to the outdoor tables).

5 /5 Wendy Parkinson: I popped into Crates with my family & our puppy George for a late breakfast. I found the staff extremely friendly. We were all happy with our menu choices. Everything was cooked to perfection. No greasy fry ups here. We look forward to our return visit.

2 /5 G Mac: Having visited this Cafe/Store/Eatery this morning I am left somewhat disappointed. From the outside the venue looks inviting and promises all range of food delights, but the experience itself has left me underwhelmed. At 10am on a weekday morning, wanting coffee and a pastry, they only had 2 croissants left. Now whilst this may indicate that theyve had a busy morning, it was only 10am!! The coffee was average, but a good size and the toasted tea cake resembled something that had been shown the toaster instead of being placed into it. The 60p pot of jam that accompanied the tea cake was no more than a teaspoon amount. The pot of butter that came with it was larger! The size of the teacake was reasonable, but sadly not enough toasting had occurred. The server, albeit very polite, presented us with cutlery in was seemed like a mini sleeping bag or one of those cases your father may have kept his comb in. Despite having a selection of all the coffees and teas you could imagine, they had absolutely no flavoured syrups for hot chocolate, merely suggesting honey as an alternative. The cooked breakfasts that appeared for other customers looked delicious and the venue was busy. We really liked that they allowed dogs and even had options for them in the menu. However, we left feeling that the Cafe/Shop/Eatery (still not 100% sure which they are trying to be), was overpriced, not up to date with current desires for coffee/hot chocolate syrups and a little pretentious.
