Fiona Churchouse Despite working in Twickenham for years, Ive never visited this place before. I put that right on Friday. What a wonderful place! We were introduced to the house in the original entrance hall by Nigel, an extremely knowledgeable and entertaining volunteer, and then toured round the rest of the property. Every room was a delight and all the volunteers had interesting information about each area of the house. I loved the 20th century "Egyptian" ceiling in one bedroom and the original flocked wallpaper in another but, my goodness, the Gallery! What a breathtaking example of gothic interior design. It was truly fabulous. Along with the beautiful paintings and furniture, fireplaces and ceiling details, the restoration of this house has really given the visitor a taste of what it might have been like to live in a grand and fashionable house in the 18th century. We also had a very tasty toasted sandwich in the bright and airy cafe and a wander round the garden.

W W Howe Marble Hill house is the former home of Henrietta Howard and is the last complete survivor of the elegant villas that bordered the Thames between Richmond and Hampton Court in the 18th century. Henriettas story is an interesting one, born into the wealthy Hobart family of Blickling Hall in Norfolk she was the mistress of king George II who gifted her the funds to build Marble Hill house. Later the house was owned by Johnathan Peel, the brother of Sue Robert Peel and later again by the Cunard family of shipping fame. Inside the house are numerous portraits including Henrietta, George II and other influential people if the time. There is a mahogany staircase which would have been very expensive and it is believed that George II had a hand in this two. The poet Alexander Pope was a frequent visitor to Marble Hill and was thought to hold a candle for Henrietta but this was not reciprocated. He had a hand in the design of the gardens and was also able to invite his literary friends including Johnathan Swift. Eventually Pope withdrew no doubt due to the fact Henrietta was not romantically attracted to him. The house is managed by English Heritage but is currently free to enter for all. There is a car park which is free for members and chargeable for non members. There are public toilets on the ground floor of the house including an accessible toilet. Refreshments are available at the former stable block a few minutes walk from the house. The gardens and parklands are quite large and again free to all, a great place to picnic, walk your dog, exercise etc. and is close to the Thames path.

I will be returning soon to top up my curiosity of the area.

Lynn Mumford Ham House in a lovely spot near the Thames in Richmond. Having watched a number of productions on TV (sense and sensibility and Taboo to name but a few) which this has been featured. Visited 16/6/25 on a lovely summers day. Beautiful house and garden. There is parking a short walk away by the river, they seemed to cater for disabled parking on site. A nice walled garden at the rear with a nice cafe.

Santosh Mathew Good place to see many different types of flowers. Strangely, this came up when I searched for Tulip plantations and this came up. But there were no tulips when we visited. The surprising highlight was there were deer up, close and personal, not fenced in, out in the open. That was really breathtaking.
